“I’m not brave. Aren’t you afraid too? When the wind blew, I realized it’s just me and you, and a string, and a hole we just got to get through in the sky to learn to fly.”

I spent the better part of last year learning this lesson so I wrote this song for Faeren to perform. I became fascinated with the Maori as I researched for Book 6 in the Fairy Godmother Academy series. Did you know they were once known for their kite making? It could take ten men to launch one of their large kites. And they would always sing a charm to help the kite fly higher.

This is my kite charm song for Book 6

Learn To Fly by Jan Bozarth
June 2011

I’m not brave
Aren’t you afraid too?
When the wind blew
I realized
It’s just me and you

And a string
And a hole we just got to get through
In the sky
To learn to fly

It’s not a trip to London, New York or LA
It’s the love that you pray for
The open door
It’s your rich and your poor
It’s the honesty play
It’s the things that you say you want
Then try
To learn to fly

Come on come on come on
And open your arms wide
Out on the ledge
Up to the edge
Close your eyes tight

Feels like falling
Sky is calling
Earth is moving
Clouds are passing

So I like to have a “true north” check in. Is there still singing and dancing? Are flowers still blooming? Are the kids ok? Do I still like chocolate and strawberries? I started the story on Book 6 a few weeks ago. I’ll give you a hint… there will be a baby born in Aventurine, the fantasy world in my Fairy Godmother Academy stories. It’s an auspicious event for me as a writer and a person though. It symbolizes rebirth. SO yes there will be songs, dancing, flowers, and a new baby. Things are OK here in my own little world.

Random House is officially releasing it on August 24th, but you can pre-order it now on Amazon. Here’s a little bit more about the book:

Zally Guevara always knows where she’s going. She has a passion for maps of all kinds and can’t wait to pack her suitcase and explore the world. But Zally doesn’t have to wait to get her wish. With the help of a cup of magical cocoa from her grandmother, she travels to a place that only girls training to become fairy godmothers can get to—the enchanted dreamland of Aventurine, a place that has no map.

In Aventurine, Zally is given her quest: to save a fairy queen who has lost her will to live. Zally’s companions are a young fairy with a broken wing, and a stallion prince. The trio’s journey proves to be even more challenging than they could have imagined as they meet monsters and get lost in a ruined fairy city. All the while, Zally is making a map of Aventurine and discovering that she has a talent, passed down from generations of women in her family: understanding the thoughts of animals. But will this be enough to save the fairy queen and ensure that Zally can continue her fairy-godmother training?

A lot of girls ask me how to find out what your Spirikin (spirit animal) is.

Try the Spirikin Activity at The Fairy Godmother Academy

First of all, your Spirikin will change over the course of your lifetime. Let’s say your Spirikin is a dolphin right now, but it could be a lion next year. So how do you know who your Spirikin is? Just pay attention to any animal you’re attracted to. Maybe you have tons of stuffed rabbits or pictures of birds in your room. The one you feel most connected you could be your spirit animal. If you consistently dream about a particular animal, that IS your Spirikin.

A Spirkin is a special kind of spirit animal that represents something about yourself that you need to learn to help you in your life. For example, Kerka’s Spirikin was the snow leopard who was patient, calm and would lie in wait planning her attack. The snow leopard taught her how to defend herself against enemies.

Each Spirikin has something to teach you to help you with other people or weird situations. For example, a butterfly represents lightness, freedom and joy, so maybe you’re being a little too serious about things. The butterfly can remind you to lighten up a little!

So what do you always gravitate toward at the zoo? Do you dream about one sort of animal again and again?

This is me with Olivia Griffin Erikson age 6. Olivia’s mom told me they had read Birdie’s Book and were ready to get into Kerka’s Book now. Olivia’s favorite part of Birdie’s Book was when Birdie and Kerka swam with the River Maidens.

Of course, we all know Kerka was forced to swim because she was afraid of the water. Those sly River Maidens showed her that she could breathe under water and swim as well as Birdie. Sometimes we just need someone to nudge us into doing things. A gentle push into unknown territory is a good thing.

Thanks to Olivia, Terra Toys and all the girls who love fairies and the Fairy Godmother Academy!

I was invited to do a small gathering of women in Santa Barbara at the home of Jane Olson. I only knew two of the 13 women when I arrived. There was a psychic/author, Reiki healer, Tibetan energy worker/artist from Paris, global environmentalist, human rights activist, and more. All were doing work in some capacity to heal the world and its children.

I came in the second day with the energy of a missile shot from LA. My entertainment biz persona glowed white hot against the cool blue ocean and relaxed spirits who had one whole day before to come down from their normal lives. They gently coaxed me down through the layers and it didn’t hurt that a school of dolphin appeared twenty feet off her deck, jumping and playing around an anchored sailboat. There was a black lab named Idaho that showed up to kiss my face each time I’d get stuck at an ugly street layer. We named the group Amma Soup and vowed to return regularly.

I returned to LA the next day, May 20, 2010, renewed. My one big appointment commented that I was glowing. That was true. So I cried like I always do when something is true.

I presented the FGA to 500 kids in the Clear Creek school district thanks to my new best librarian friends in the area. It was a 50/50 mix of boys and girls. This was especially interesting as it gave me insight into what boys would like about the books. Since I was prepared with our two handmade Kalis sticks it was easy to see they wanted to see that Martial Art form come to life. But all the kids- boys and girls- wanted to talk about their dreams, animal spirits, and how they might be a part of the movie making of the Fairy Godmother Academy.

One of the schools had a signer interpreting my presentation. Afterward a little boy named Fernando came to me wanting to buy Birdie’s Book. He was with his sign language coach, the same woman who had signed my speech. She helped him communicate with me with a mixture of signing and speech. It made me think of ways that this magical world could be expanded to deaf and blind children. The sensual world of Aventurine- the dream world belongs to everyone. I am working on making the Kalis dance video for the deaf.

The project continues to grow and morph with consciousness. Thank you Fernando- a young fairy prince no doubt.

She danced in a ballet company at eleven, started a dream journal at thirteen, joined a surf club at sixteen, studied flower essences at eighteen, and went on to study music, art, and poetry in college. As a girl, she dreamed of a life that would weave these different interests together. Her dream came true when she grew up and had a big family and a music and writing career. Jan is now a grandmother and writes stories and songs for young people. Jan credits her own mother, Dora, with handing down her wisdom: Dream big and never give up. more >

By starlight, you may bring me your tears and your joy. I will hold your visions as I did you grand mothers’. You may collect them upon your awakening or your blooming.

By sunlight, you may see me in water reflections or hear me in wind blown leaves. You will feel me in the proud bow, the golden always and the crystal now.

I will change when you change, but my song will remain constant. No matter how long the wait, there will be no good byes.

Care for me. Tell of me often to disbelievers. For they need me and you- more than ever now.

I am always here. Tend the flame.

Work is a dirty word. It implies drudgery & hardship. I like to think of the preparation of a flower bed or cleaning the counters that will hold delicious foods. Plant the seeds in good, strong soil. Lay out the ingredients on a clean table. Water the seeds. Mix the cake batter.

I lovingly prepare myself to bloom – to rise – to amaze. Every step I take is work in a way. But I prefer to call it the preparation, the answer to my calling, the acknowledgment of the gifts, the tender caring for of the precious, the sacred and the rare. So I prepare for my success. By modern standards, it is “work.”

I say, “thank you,” for this work.

Jan has been busy designing two new “tween” girl brands for US clients for release into the game and toy markets in 2005. The Fairy Godmother Academy© and Cogo© cover the gamut from smart to pretty tackling the much-sought-after target audience of girls ages 8-12 years old (see December 16, 2004, 60 Minutes interview with ex girl gamer, Laura Groppe of the Girl’s Intelligence Agency or GIA). The Family Jam has completed the first stage of this year’s long-awaited release of Pet Eyes©. Shane and Jan contributed music for an audio storybook that can be downloaded from the <del datetime="2010-05-10T01:45:58+00:00">www.mypeteyes.com</del> site. Shane Madden (Govinda) added a beautiful score to the reading by Lisa Richards to Jan’s original lullabies and tunes like “Jewel”. Other products still to come are: the coffee table book with images from Andrea Burden, posters and cards, and activities. We now have Sanskrit and Welsh translations of the ten key concepts in the book. Evan Bozarth designed the site with brother, Dustin Bozarth, doing the back-end and animation. Boz Bros Design has created an amazing interface filled with the Pet Eyes animals and lots of groovy ways to get around. This has been another Family Jam production. Thanks to every one of you for helping birth this product! Happy New Year!
