I went online to find some ideas to help me write a handout paper that might encourage ladies at a "Girls Nite Out" fundraiser to consider helping with a "Fairy Godmother Project" began in 2008 by myself (a floral designer) and my friend also a designer,artist and owner of the florist where we work. Like you we consider what we do to be an outlet for our god given gifts.We are are thankful everyday for the opportunities to help others show their love for people in their lives by offering flowers that express these emotions. More often than I like, I hear the phrase "well they will just die" I cringe inside at this attitude. This is the attitude of a fearful person. When we look around us we see all life in different stages of death. As the bible teaches us, all are born to die once and be reborn again in god's grace. Even so with flora and fauna. I try to teach people to look at flowers in thier yard along the roadside or out in a field to see the different stages of life. Is a rose bud more beautiful than a full blown rose in it's maturity? Are pine trees more beautiful and fragrant in the spring bursting worth their pollen than in the fall when they are dropping their woody fragrant cones reseeding themselves for another generation of pine trees? The master designer who taught me was a gentle man who suffered much because of his lifestyle. From him I learned to love again and was healed by the flowers and the people we "worked" with daily. Our Lord truly has put everything and everybody we need here on this earth, which he gave us, when we learn his word and use his word in our lives we will reconize the blessings he has laid in the paths he prepared for us. Like you, I see the need of young girls to learn about who they are becoming and how their beliefs and behaviors effect others. As God's Word teaches us ,woman was created for man to be a helpmate always by his side. Unfortunitely not only in todays' world but through out history girls have been used as "workers" , "playthings" , "sexslaves" , "breeders" , pawns in the adult world both by male and female adults. Loaded down with responsibilities of adulthood before they are mentally or emotionally prepared. Too many girls enter into adulthood minus an understanding of who they are or what gifts they have to offer this world. These girls make poor students,employees,mothers,wives,teachers and on and on. Many times they make poor choices for their lives because they are unaware of the fact that their life is theirs' . They have not been taught choices made by them are their choices to own and will have an effect on them and all those around them now and forever. Thank you for using the gifts from your heart to help girls . However my concern is these books are targeted at girls who have families and resources to attend tea parties . Playing dress up is fun and important for a girl but a girl who has younger siblings to care for after school because her mother works the night shift or who has no mother or an abusive father has no access to such books or activities. These are the girls we are targeting with our Fairy Godmother Project. Like me many girls never have an opportunity to play dress up for fantasy play or in real life. Our project helps these girls realize they are beautiful inside and out. We help these "slightly worn" girls to go to their junior and senior proms. We collect ,clean and mend prom,bridesmaids and evening gowns for loan to as many as 50 girls each year to attend these important events in their lives. We also collect make-up,hair accessories,shoes,purses and health and beauty aids for them. In 2009 we asked ladies to volunteer their gifts of beauty to our girls with some success. Most of our girls had never had their hair professionally cut and styled nor wore make-up. Being a beautiful woman yourself I know you can imagene the transformations in their appearance and spirits. For the first time in their lives they looked in the mirror and felt beautiful. Many tears flowed from all involved with these transformations. Not only did they look like a woman of value according to world standards they felt a tiny spark of value and self worth. This is the spark we must instill in our girls world wide. A spark that will stay with them through the tough times . A spark that says "YES" I am beautiful ,I have value, I can make my world a safe place. Our prayer is... the spark will stay in their hearts when the tough choices need to be made such as.... should I study for my test , do my homework, go to school everyday,read the Lord's Word prepare myself for a life of joy and accomplishment, have a dream? Is a dream only for girls with a stable homelife ,economically secure with loving parents? Will their choices be made based on their current circumstances , low self esteem ,no vision of who they may someday become, what they may someday be capable of accomplishing? Will they carry their scars of not being like other girls with the same beauty ,talents and hopes into their futures to pass on to their children? We all have something we can give to these girls. Will you help a girl to feel she has value in this world ? Will you help a girl to be beautiful and twirl in a beautiful dress for all the world to see? After all...... Girls just want to have fun.
